King Charles, Queen Camilla delay Vatican visit plan

(MENAFN) King Charles and Queen Camilla's planned visit to the Vatican has been postponed "by mutual agreement," Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday, citing Pope Francis's ongoing recovery from illness.

The postponement comes as medical advice suggests the 88-year-old pontiff requires an extended period of rest following a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia. Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday after a five-week stay at Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

"Their Majesties send The Pope their best wishes for his convalescence and look forward to visiting him in The Holy See, once he has recovered," the palace statement read.

The announcement follows last week's confirmation that the royal couple were scheduled to meet Pope Francis during a visit to Rome next month. Despite the Vatican portion of the trip being delayed, the palace confirmed that the royal couple's broader visit to Italy is still expected to proceed as planned.
